A soldier named Pheidippides ran from a battlefield in the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C., bringing news of a Greek victory over the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides delivered the momentous message “Niki!” (“victory”), then collapsed and died. The Greeks revived this legend by staging a marathon at the 1896 Olympics in Athens and it spawned today’s global marathon phenomeon. This year 25,000 runners will take part in the 2010 St. George Melbourne Marathon Festival and all Little Athletes can too.
